Abrasives

HOMEPAGE / PRODUCTS / OCCUPATIONAL / SAFETY / PRODUCTS

Sandpaper is the name given to the material used to smooth the rough surfaces to be processed. Abrasives are also used to clean rust, old paint and varnish. Sandpaper is material consisting of abrasive crystallized sand particles. It is generally used in the manufacturing and construction industry. It is a process that provides smoothness of surfaces made of materials such as metal, wood, marble, plaster. Sanding is the last operation before paint and primer application.

What are the Sandpaper Types?

The sandpaper, which helps smooth out rough surfaces, is diversified according to different categories. Sandpaper types are categorized as follows:

  1. Sandpaper Types According to Their Shapes: Flat sanding, round sanding, roller sanding and oval sanding
  2. Sandpaper Types According to the Material:Felt Sanding, Fiber Sanding, Metal Sanding, Wood Sanding, Cloth Sanding
  3. Types of Abrasives According to Uses:Hand sander and mechanical sander
  4. Sandpaper Types According to Thickness:Coarse sanding, very coarse sanding, fine sanding, very fine sanding, medium sanding
  5. Sandpaper Types According to Usage Areas:Wood sander, paint sander, furniture sander, glass sander, iron sander

What is Sandpaper?

It is the main material that is placed on the sanding machine and performs the sanding process. The product is manufactured from fine particles of natural or synthetic materials. The particles are sieved with the help of sieves and classified according to their size.

Abrasive paper and abrasive stone are two concepts that are quite confused. Although their functions are the same, their usage areas and shapes are different.

What Does a Emery Stone Do?

Abrasive wheels are cutting tools made of abrasive particles bonded together with organic or inorganic binders. Grinding wheel is widely used in the metal industry, from roughing of castings and welds to the most precise grinding of foil rolls. The product, which is often used in the metal industry, is also used in the glass and ceramic industry.

What Does Sanding Do?

The sandpaper ensures that the rough surfaces are made smooth. It is the material used to sharpen the edges of the material and to make the matte surfaces shiny. It provides removal of scratches on glass surfaces. Water sander provides a bright finish in the automobile industry, sanding of marble and metals.

What is the Sanding Grit Count?

What is abrasive sand? The sanding grit number indicates the amount of grain per unit area on the sanding surface. The more sand particles in the unit area, the finer the sandpaper, that is, the higher the sand value. The smaller the amount of sand grains per unit area, the larger the grain size will be, so the coarser the sandpaper, that is, the lower the sand value.

What Do Sanding Numbers Mean?

Abrasive numbers indicate how fine or coarse the grit that provides wear on the abrasive is. The lower the grit number on the grit sander, the finer the finishing results. Lower grit numbers mean a coarser paper. For example, 200 grit sandpaper is in the fine sanding category.

Usage Areas of Abrasives According to Their Numbers

Abrasives with different numbers are used for different purposes and surfaces. The areas of use of the sandpapers are grouped as follows:

Number 0 Sandpaper:

Mine, wood, etc. It is a thick paper on which sandpaper powder is adhered, which is used for grinding the face of things, smoothing and polishing.

Abrasives with Very Low Grit Number (24-36 Grit):

It is used in processes where high abrasiveness is required. For example, it can be used to remove paint and varnish, which can be difficult to remove from surfaces. It is also used for sanding old parquets. It is a type of sandpaper with very high abrasiveness.

Abrasives with Low Grit Number (40-50 Grit):

The abrasive type with large grit is used to remove not very thick finishes from the surfaces and to shape the wood. Their abrasiveness is quite high.

Abrasives with Medium Grit Number (60-100 Grit):

The abrasive, which is used to eliminate the roughness while shaping the wood, is also used to prepare the hardwoods before processing and to ensure better adhesion of the product to be applied. Their abrasiveness is moderate.

Abrasives with High Grit Number (120-220 Grit):

This type of abrasive, which is suitable for use as the last step in household uses, is also used to remove the final roughness on the surface and to prepare the surface for polishing. It has low abrasiveness.

Abrasives with Very High Grit Numbers (240 and above Grit Values):

Abrasives with grit values between 240 and 400 are used between coats in paint and varnish applications. Errors in paint/varnish application are eliminated by increasing the adhesion of the surface. Sand values of 600 and above are used for polishing surfaces because they have very fine sands. Their abrasiveness is very low.

What is Sanding Block?

In order for the sandpaper to be applied to the surface better, the tree wrapped on it is made in the form of a wedge. It makes the sandpaper easy to use. Sanding blocks are made of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, plaster. Sanding blocks are used for better sanding on smooth surfaces. The lower parts are made of flexible materials such as cork and rubber. The sanding block, which has various sizes, is among the products preferred in the sanding process in terms of ease of use.

What is Water Sander?

Water sanding is a sanding method in which water or similar liquids are used as a lubricant. It provides a smoother and less abrasive sanding. It is mostly applied as the last step in sanding to obtain glossy surfaces. Depending on the process to be performed at the level, it is possible to choose among many types such as 800 grit sandpaper, 2000 grit sandpaper, 3000 grit sandpaper.

Where Is Water Sandpaper Used?

Especially in the automobile industry, this type of sanding is preferred in order to obtain a bright finish when sanding marble and metals. This type of sandpaper; It helps to obtain an even, smooth and shiny appearance.
